“Resilience and efficiency are not friends.”

A dialogue between Policy andSecurity Experts from Versicherungskammer Bayern and Allianz:The ITHM’s regular get-together in April 2026 focused on the significant overlaps between the topics and areas of responsibility of the insurance industry and crisis and aid organizations.

“Resilience and efficiency are not friends.” That sums it up perfectly. And there is hardly a better way to capture the essence of the fascinating dialogue between Dr. Gerhard Tropp, Chief Sustainability Officer at Versicherungskammer, and Matthias Lange, Senior Executive in Charge of Policy and Regulation at Allianz SE, at the ITHM regulars’ table in April 2026.

Dr. Joachim Ziegler welcomes the guests and speakers to the ITHM regulars' gathering in April 2026.

Both Lange and Tropp serve as reservists in the German Armed Forces in addition to their work in the insurance industry. They demonstrated to ITHM members at the “Weisses Bräuhaus” in Munich just how closely the knowledge from these two worlds is intertwined:

– What if cyberattacks no longer originate from individual criminals but from state actors (“War is also decided on the internet”)?

– How do systematic attacks on infrastructure (e.g., power grids) affect business continuity management and the maintenance of public order?

– What does effective prevention look like?

– (How) Can one mitigate the associated risks?

Both experts agree that society and the business world have looked the other way for far too long, lulling themselves into a false sense of security. Yet resilience doesn’t develop overnight, and certainly not for free—as the opening quote makes clear.

This makes it all the more important to raise the profile of crisis and aid organizations: The VKB will therefore even hold a “Uniform Day” in June. Employees who volunteer with the fire department, emergency medical services, or mountain rescue—as well as those in the military—will wear their respective uniforms on that day.

A truly fascinating roundtable discussion—one that once again demonstrated just how important it is to look (and think) beyond the horizon. After all, insurance matters to society! And it’s all about community.
